Who are the Knicks members holding their hands this season?

The season opener in Memphis is six days away, with one pre-season game remaining on the agenda after Wednesday’s 109-100 loss in Indiana.

nicks gold 2-1 on the show roster enters Friday’s final against the Wizards, and while the win-and-loss record means little in the grand scheme of things, we’ve already seen glimpses of Tom Thibodeau’s team and could be on his quest to erase bad taste from last year’s playoff miss.

But who do you think is under the most pressure among the Knicks and Coppers to bring this season back the optimism and goodwill from their surprising run into the post-season in 2020-21?

In this week’s newsletter, let’s analyze five of those Knicks who prominently face this question, while fully aware that it clearly extends somewhat throughout the roster and senior team.

• Julius Rundle: Was the striker’s strong campaign in 2020-21 – in which he was named the league’s best player and earn the NBA second-team honor – was out of his career? Or can Randle re-establish himself as a player after declining count stats and shot percentages across the board in On a personal and team level, disappointingWhich also included some tepid moments between him and the New York crowd? Probably no member of the starting line-up will benefit more than Add a free proxy From point guard Galen Bronson from randlwho should be freed from a lot of the ball-handling duties he has taken so willingly in the past few years.

“I think the games have been a bit choppy because of the way minutes are distributed, so he’s going to get a better tempo as we get closer to kicks this season,” Thibodeau said this week of Randle, who has a four-year, $117 million contract extension. “But I love his demeanor, and I love the playmaking. I think we should look for him in the transition a little bit more. But if he’s pushing it, like just creating speed, but also when you’re going off a great move, don’t stand up. I think when he’s creating the movement, because it’s like That magnet, people are going to collapse in front of him, and that just opens up the floor. So even though he might not score, he’s done a lot of good for us.”

• Galen Bronson: The former Villanova star appeared calm and relaxed both in attack management and within Take on some leadership responsibilities That comes with his $104 million four-year deal after the postseason outbreak last spring with the Mavericks. He’s never played with Tibodo before, but the 26-year-old Bronson arrived with some familiarity with being around him from a young age — with his dad Rick, a member of the head coach’s staff in Chicago, Minnesota and now New York. Bronson seems to have the necessary skills and the right mindset on and off the field to thrive here, and it shouldn’t hurt him that the point guard level has been so low with this franchise for the better part of the past two decades.

• Tom Thibodeau: Obviously, there was Calls for the position of coach When things went south last season. That’s the deal, especially in New York, even for someone who rightly took home the Coach of the Year award after the Knicks’ 41-31 turnaround season in 2020-21. Thibodeau has spoken of the need to improve the team’s pace at number 29 last season, and he may have the means to do so with Bronson and Derek Rose’s return from ankle injuries. Other issues remain. If Yvan Fournier suffers, the clamor to replace him in the starting line-up with Quentin Grimes will only increase. With young players pushing veterans, it’s up to Thibodeau and his revamped coaching staff to keep everyone happy and productive, and at least steer the Knicks back to playing 7-10 in the East.

• Leon Rose: The former agent turned head of the team, along with senior advisor William “Worldwide Wesley” Wesley, They couldn’t swing the bargain 1 offseason goal Donovan Mitchell before being dealt to the Cavaliers. And the front desk wasn’t aggressive enough earlier in the summer when another All-Star guard, Dejounte Murray, was traded to the Eastern Conference (Hawks). On the plus side, the Knicks have their stock and young players in stock should another star become available, possibly before the season’s February trading deadline.

• Derek rose: One of the biggest things about sports is the saying that an NBA team can be successful “if Derek Rose stays healthy.” We got that, especially at the age of 34 and having had multiple ankle surgeries following the December lockdown last season. The addition of Bronson and perhaps even the lead of second-year points guard Miles McBride means Rose shouldn’t be exhausted to open the season. The younger players look up to and speak of the best player in the previous league with respect – and Thibodeau trusts him unconditionally. Just having him around and available could be worth an extra win or two over the course of the season.

“Awesome vet. Very vocal. Obi Tobin said he talks to us every chance he gets to help us learn. “He’s still fast, he shoots very well and he’s a willing passer. … Derek’s comeback is fantastic.”

rosy look

Speaking of Rose, I thought Thibodeau provided an interesting answer when asked about the three-time All-Star saying he no longer has egos at this point in his career.

“I don’t know if I would necessarily agree to that. … You can’t do the things he did without it [one]Tibodio said. “The things that made him special, are the same [Brunson]It’s always been the vanity of the team. If you look at the things he did in high school, you’ll always find the same way. He was always willing to share the spotlight with everyone. He was always the first on the team, and as he got older he adapts and learns.

“You can’t do it in this league yourself. You need other people. But he’s always been an interested teammate. That’s what made him likable to his teammates. At this point in his career, he’s learned a lot. He’s been through a lot of ordeals. In order to get past that ordeal and be where he is today, not many people will be able to do that.”

Of course, Rose was the league’s best player at age 22 with the Bulls in 2010-11 before missing the next three seasons due to an ACL tear and other injuries.

“I think it’s very difficult for a professional athlete to go through one year of injury. And when you look at what he did, it’s basically three years in a row. So that’s not an easy thing to do,” Tibodo continued. “Especially when it’s in your hometown above it.

“So at 22 you’re the best player and go through all that stuff and be where he is today, that’s good for us because he’s shared a lot of these things with his teammates. It’s not always going to be rosy. There’s going to be ups and downs for this. So be consistent. Come on. Every day put everything in. Let the chips fall into place, but you know you did your best.”

get real

Another important question to answer is whether the Knicks can jump off to a strong start amid a gauntlet-like schedule for the season opener, starting Wednesday on the road against Ja Morant and the Grizzlies.

The next three games in the park will be against the rebuilding Pistons & Magic and then the Hornets, who may still be without All-Star guard Lamelo Ball (ankle). The Charlotte opened an eight-game stretch against the 2022 playoff teams, which also includes road contests against the Bucks, Caves, 76 Timberwolves, and Nets, and home games against the Hawks and Celtics.

Going 6-5 or even 7-4 on this 11-game segment would be a pretty impressive feat for the Knicks, who need to avoid digging a hole early in the standings.
